When you decide to landscape your environment by way of enhancing that private lawn that you have or even contributing to the neighborhood landscape, what do you normally do? Landscaping has always been considered as a great value added addition to any home, and acts as a great stress buster. In today’s high stress environments, this is a perfect getaway, available at your own premises. Local conditions have to be taken into consideration while designing your landscape. Getting exotic plants are not a great option, as these plants are not suited for all types of environments. Choosing plants is of paramount importance. The best option in such cases is to choose native plants and use them in your landscape.

Native plant communities are very useful and are instrumental in upholding the balance of the nature in a certain locality. The reason for such plants to have grown in abundance in a certain area is the availability of the soil type and minerals that help in their growth. Trying to uproot these can disturb the balance. Hence, it is vital that any landscaping be done by keeping in mind the native plants. These plants are very adaptable and require very less fertilizers or maintenance or even pesticides. This makes them very low maintenance and easy to grow. Contrary to popular belief, these plants have beautiful flowers and if kept well, by pruning them and beautifying them, they can look really attractive. Since these are low maintenance, they can be maintained by an amateur as well, and does not require any expertise.

To do this, you have to first educate yourself about the various native plants available and their cultivation methods. Always buy nursery sold native plants as these are more domestic in nature. Most nurseries have such short, easily maintainable native plants which have good showy flowers. These are best suited for personal landscapes.  Also native plants require common fertilizers like compost and hence try to supply these by processing them at home. A small compost plant is not a very tough proposition and can be easily maintained at your back yard. Keeping the sensibilities of your neighbors in mind is also important while planning your landscapes. Ensure that the plant varieties that you intend to plant at home do not cause any inconvenience to your neighbors, as some people are known to be allergic to certain types of native plants.

Even if you want to have exotic species as part of your landscape, make sure that you educate yourself well about maintaining them. Wrong types of soil or environment can kill these plants and you end up not only losing the plants but also money, as these species tend to be expensive.

And once you combine various energy-saving tricks, like using your washing machine only when you have to; hand washing dishes instead of using the dishwasher; turning the lights off when you’re not using them; switching TVs and computers off rather than leaving them on standby and turning hot water on for a set time per day rather than just switching and leaving it on, the difference will be much bigger.

Best of all, all of that energy saving will mean your utility bills have a good chunk sliced off them and you’ll be able to enjoy the moral and practical benefits of saving your wallet as well as the environment.

Several reasons exist as to why ecotourism protects natural environments and preserves traditions.  In consideration of the present and looming future state of our planet, ecotourism is the saving grace for many businesses that rely on tourism industries all over the world.  The low environmental impact, if no impact, of this niche of tourism is incomparable to that of recent years where thousands of acres of parkland and untouched earth were seen developed for some form of tourism.  Ecotourism shows an appreciation for our natural environment, history and cultural diversity that protects our natural environment while working to preserve tradition.

Historical sites and cultural facilities.

Ecotourism is really nothing new. For centuries, historical sites have been discovered, excavated and preserved by town folk, associations, governments and societies, to name only a few. The purpose of these sites generally being for visitors to view and experience, with historical accuracy, a day in the life of that time. Groups take on these projects to restore these significant sites to working order for several different reasons be it religious, cultural or historical values.  In such facilities the ecotourism fanatic would find obsolete ideas such as traditional plowing, house building, logging and popular housekeeping techniques.  These sites and projects generally really on different forms of funding, donations, and tourism related revenues.  Generally, ecotourism strives to preserve the traditions of previous generations and showcase it for customers and generations to come.

Nature and wildlife preserves.

In North America, wilderness preserves, animal sanctuaries and provincial parks protect much of our what is left of our undeveloped land and species of wildlife not yet on the endangered species list.  Every year, more and more species of animals and vegetation join the endangered species list or devastatingly become extinct.  Ecotourism facilities in this avenue of the business became popular in the last one hundred years with the emergence of places like Yellowstone National Park, the wildlife reserves of Africa and the Queen Charlotte Islands of Canada.   These facilities are a prime example of how ecotourism protects our natural environment and preserves tradition.

In conclusion, ecotourism is the future for tourism industries all over the planet.  While protecting nature and preserving tradition, ecotourism is the eco-friendly fresh footstep that the business world needs to embrace for the healthy future of our planet.   With ecotourism, upcoming generations are given the opportunity to learn and appreciate the earth and life that exists all around us.  In turn, hopefully these upcoming generations will adopt a new and healthy philosophy on how to properly respect and protect our home for many generations to come.

Thomas McDade, professor of anthropology at Northwestern University, and colleagues has compared two similar studies on home and family lifestyle and health status between the U.S. and Philippines. From this study, scientists want to observe effects on the immune system development from the childhood environment for the growth. The researchers focused the study on the blood concentration of C-reactive protein, which are non-specific acute phase inflammatory reactants and serious bacterial infection and tissue damage in a diagnostic index. As usual, C-reactive protein at high concentrations meant getting infections easily and a high degree of inflammation may lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and other diseases. The Philippines study involved more than 3300 local families, from the 1980’s, the researchers began tracking these families of newborns until they grow up to 22 years old. The researchers visited these families once every two months before the age of two, then once every four or five years. Projects of assessment in the research include the cleanliness of their children daily life such as whether there are pigs, dogs or other animals and the family’s socio-economic resources.

Compared to people in the United States at the same age, although these Filipinos are easily infected in infants and young children, but the concentration of C-reactive protein is lower than 80% at their adulthood. C-reactive protein in per liter of blood from Filipino is 0.2 milligrams while the American’s is 1 to 1.5 milligrams per liter. “Compared with the Americans, C-reactive protein in Filipinos is significantly lower, the result is contrary to many people’s expectations, because we know that the Philippines have a higher risk of disease contagious”, Thomas McDade said, “Our results show that early life with the ultra-clean environment may lead to more inflammation in adult life, thereby increasing the risk of suffering from various diseases.”

McDade said in a research report, adults with high levels of C-reactive protein means that less exposure to animals waste in childhood. “Bacteria and microorganisms play an important role in the promotion of development of the immune system” he said. At the same time, he cited an example that development of brain is faster in early life, many neural established connections during this time, you need to keep in touch with your environment thoroughly to promote the establishment of these connections. Development of the immune system also needs to stimulate the external environment, which make it feel the need for further development.

Society has been more and more conscious about our environment. For example, when we use primitive technology to try to heat up our homes, the environment gets polluted. More and more, such systems are going the way of the dinosaur. Older systems are giving way to cleaner, more advanced, and more energy efficient systems. The goal is simple and clear – save more energy, and save the environment.

But saving the environment sounds like something meant for an idealist. Is it even practical to actively support such an idea? In the past, the answer would be no. However, today, technology has taken great leaps. And this has allowed us to provide practical solutions to the environmental issue. Take for example, the geothermal home heating system.

The geothermal home heating system cost several thousand dollars to install. While this sounds like a lot of money upfront, this is in fact a cost saving system for the homeowner. There is no burning, no pollution, and the entire system uses very little energy. How does it achieve that?

The geothermal heating system is not really new technology. It has been around since the Roman times. Romans use it to heat their villas and bathing water. So why is it that such a system hasn’t been widely adopted for the modern society? It was only in recent times that more and more homeowners start to adopt this system again.

Perhaps as technology evolved, and other heating systems become readily available, it’s easy to choose a more affordable heating system over the geothermal heating system. And this process will continue if alarm bells weren’t sounded – other systems are hurting the environment and wasting valuable resources.

So we have to go back to the drawing board to rethink how we can continue to keep heating up homes without causing further harm to the environment. And the geothermal heating system has resurfaced as a viable solution.

The term geothermal is made up of two words actually – “geo” and “thermal”. Geo refers to the earth, and thermal refers to the heat. You can probably guess where the system draws the heat from. That’s right, the system draws heat from the earth. Or more specifically, it draws heat from the soil.

Water, refrigerants, or an anti-freeze solution is used by the geothermal heating system. The liquid runs through pipes that go underground, and draws heat from the soil. The heat energy is then transported via the pipes to the house. This happens when the weather is cold.

When the weather is hot (i.e. summer), the process is reversed. Refrigerants run underground to be cooled, and the cold refrigerants run through the house to cool the house down.

The greatest benefit of the geothermal heating system is great energy savings. It can save up to 70 percent on heating, and up to 50 percent on cooling. This means lower monthly utilities bills.

Currently there are over 30 million cars and other types of motor vehicle in use in the UK.  Every year around 2 million new vehicles are registered with a similar number being scrapped and recycled.  With the average lifespan of a car being 14 years it has been necessary to set regulations in place for what should happen to a vehicle at the end of its useful life.

There are a number of possible reasons why a vehicle could need to be scrapped.  The car may have been badly damaged in a collision, have failed its MOT, be no longer cost effective to repair or may simply be no longer wanted.  Whatever the reason it is important that the vehicle is disposed of according to a set process and in-line with current environmental standards and regulations.

In the UK regulations for disposing of vehicles are set out by the DVLA and the Environment Agency.    Traditionally cars were broken up for spare parts with the remains being crushed and melted down.  This changed with an EU directive introduced in 2000 that was designed to increase vehicle recycling and minimise the environmental impact of disposal.  This EU directive became part of UK law in 2003.

Current regulations state that all vehicle disposals should be carried out by authorised dismantlers.  It also requires the ‘de-pollution’ of cars before they are recycled.  De-pollution involves emptying fuel, brake fluid, engine oil and anti-freeze as well as removing other items including batteries, airbags, catalysts and mercury-bearing components.   The current aim is for 80% of vehicles to be reused or recycled with this figure rising to 85% of vehicles by 2015.

Disposing and recycling your vehicle according to these standards has many environmental benefits.  For example, estimates state that as much as half of the 20,000 tonnes of oil removed from vehicles by motorists is handled improperly.  Any oil that leaks into rivers or streams can cause contamination.  As little as one litre of waste oil is enough to contaminate one million litres of oil and oil poured onto the ground can affect soil fertility. 

In the UK anyone who has a vehicle they wish to dispose of is now required to go to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).  An ATF is a scrap dealer or vehicle dismantler who is licensed to recycle and scrap vehicles.  Every ATF will have the facilities necessary to de-pollute vehicles and remove items for recycling.   When handing their vehicle over to be scrapped the ATF will hand over a Certificate of Destruction.  This certificate is used as proof that the car has been taken off the road and has been destroyed.  The Certificate of Destruction is needed when cancelling road tax and vehicle registration.

Every person has different types of environments that they work better in. Some people need be in a place where background music is playing, while others need to be in a completely pin-drop quiet atmosphere.

I believe that a good working environment greatly affects the productivity of one’s work.

And although the two necessary things you need to make money online – a computer and the internet – can be found in many places, or anywhere if you just have a laptop, I believe that working home, the library, or a nearby coffee shop are the places that most of us go to get most of work done online.

Since I like hearing bad news before good news, I’ll go through this article describing about these places, starting with the cons first and the pros last.

Your Home

You’ll probably spend most of your time working at home Working at home is great if you live by yourself. If you live with your family, then you probably know what it feels like to have one of your family members walk into the room every ten minutes and telling you, “Go do something besides being online!”

You might be shaking your head right now. I agree, it can be somewhat annoying at times.

What about living with your friends? You might start working and then all of the sudden hear the TV outside of your room, driving you practically insane, r hearing people talking outside of your room, which you have no choice but to hear their conversion, and if it’s interesting enough, you’ll probably get distracted and want to join in.

Basically, the biggest disadvantage of working at home is the potential distraction caused by other people living in the same house, and these things can really be endless.

But, there are good upsides to working at your home. When you’re working at home, you’re most likely working in a room, meaning that you’re free to be completely comfortable with yourself. You can stretch whenever you want, walk around, sing, dance, shout, and do whatever you want.

You also have easy access to the bathroom and refrigerator, rather than having to wait for vacancy or starve when you feel hungry and low on cash. You can take a break anywhere you want in your house such as lie on the couch for ten minutes and relieve some stress.

Finally, you get to create your own working environment, however you like; whether you to have a plant next to the window or having your desk completely clean and clutter free, you have control over your own space.

To me, I find it best working at home early in the morning where everyone’s sleeping and you have a fresh mind, or working at home late at night like at 1 A.M. when everyone’s asleep and the house is in complete silence.

Other than that, I find that working at home during the day can get you easily distracted, in which case the library or coffee shop would be a better option to getting more work done.

The Library

Although libraries seem to be “the place” to do some studying or get work done, I find it difficult to stay there for very long periods of time.

First of all, libraries can get really cold fast.

Have you ever been to one expecting the temperature to be okay, then ten minutes into it you realize that your legs are getting chili because all you’re wearing is shorts, and now you’re stuck because you don’t want to drive back home which is twenty minutes away?

It’s one of the feelings where you just have to work while adapting to the temperature where you have no control over.

Another thing about the library is that with so many people around, it gets way too quiet sometimes.

I don’t mind being in a quiet atmosphere when I’m working alone, but in the library, do you ever notice that any sudden actions you make can cause awkward eye contact or stares from nearby people?

It almost feels like you are constrained in your own space and can’t and can be as free as you would be in your own home. This kind of cold atmosphere can become quite uncomfortable if you’re not a person that can sit still in one place around people in complete silence.

Nevertheless, some people like the feeling being in complete silence all the way until their work is done. The good thing about the library is that if your house is too loud, the library is always a place you can rely on for quietness.

Plus there are usually computers, books, dictionaries, articles, and magazines that you can use as additional resources.

But the best aspect of libraries is the social working atmosphere. When you take look around and see other people working hard; whether it’s working on graduate papers, studying for math exams, preparing for the GRE, these are people who go to the library because they are serious in passing their test, achieving good grades, and doing well in life.

Seeing everybody working on something motivates you to work as well with them, resulting in getting more of your work done. It gives you the feeling that even though you don’t know anyone, everybody is kind of in this together.

This “quiet energy” is one of the better advantages that working in the library has, compared to working in busier environments.

A Coffee Shop

The coffee shop is my favorite place to work. However, it’s not free.

You could probably pass by just bringing your laptop, saying “hello” to the workers, and sitting down without ordering anything, but, well, that would just be weird.

Usually you go in and order something out of courtesy that you’re using their environment, even if it’s something small like coffee, and it can add up.

One round of coffee costs about $3 or $4, and if you plan to stay the whole day, you might need multiple rounds of coffee, which could cost $10 or more. This doesn’t include the internet fee that some coffee places charge, which would be another $3 for 24 hours.

Not that great if you already have internet at home…

Also, unlike the library, if you’re a person that needs minimal noise level, it can get distracting at peak hours at coffee shops.

Imagine finally settling down in the table you choose and starting your work, only to be interrupted by the voices of two best friends, sitting in the table next to you telling each other about their entire awesome, awesome weekend.

“Just great…” you mutter, looking at them with an unfavorable smile.

But most of the times, this won’t happen. It’s part of the best part of working at a coffee shop – the social atmosphere. You sit down anywhere, and it’s completely relaxed. There are people reading the newspaper, people chatting and laughing, usually some nice enjoyable background music, and finally, there’s coffee to stimulate your mind.

The place is just alive.

Even though it’s of a somewhat noisy environment, it’s still one that’s definitely workable in. Plus, unless you spill your coffee on someone’s newspaper, you don’t have to worry about awkward tension from people because no one cares. Everyone’s just doing their own thing and in the time that they are there and enjoying a cup of coffee.

In conclusion, there will be pros and cons to every place you work. Try to figure out where you can work the best because it can greatly affect the outcome of your work.

If you’re pissed off that your family members or roommates keep talking to in the house, apply for a library membership and stay there for a couple of hours. If you feel like the library is too cold or serious of a place for you to work, change your location to the nearest Starbucks. If you feel like you’re wasting money on music that you can listen at home or drinks that make you too antsy, get some earphones, close the door, and work in your room.

The joy of a home base business doesn’t necessarily mean you have to work at home, as long as you have access to the internet, you can work anywhere.

So pick a place that you feel is the most effective for you, a place that not only can you get work done, but get work done productively, and finally, a place that you simply just enjoy being in.

The fight for the planet is on. It is now fully proven, undeniably, evident that the earth is fighting for its life. During its short but deadly lifespan, human civilization has managed to place a devastating strain on the planet’s resources and health.

It is now our duty to reverse this ill effect, even though it may be too late. Most of the environmental concerns with computers lie with the monitor, specifically its cathode ray tube (CRT). Each color monitor contains, on average, four to five pounds of lead, considered hazardous waste when disposed of, according to EPA standards. Computers also contain other hazardous materials, including mercury, cadmium (a known carcinogen), and hexavalent chromium (shown to cause high blood pressure, iron-poor blood, liver disease, and nerve and brain damage in animals).

One way to get rid of old computer equipment is to donate it to one of the many non-profit organizations that will accept it. Many local schools and non-profits could greatly benefit from your old computer equipment. Two sites to help you donate are sharetechnology.org and cristina.org.

If you believe that your equipment is beyond repair or reuse, one option for disposal is the full dismantling of the hardware. Many hardware manufacturers, such as Dell, Apple and HP, provide their own programs to dismantle and recycle old equipment. You can visit each of their respective sites to find out how these programs work.

The final option is to seek out a reputable hardware recycling or asset recovery program online. One problem with the current computer sales environment is that consumers are goaded too frequently to buy upgraded or better computer hardware. This cycle creates more waste on the other end when the old equipment model is ’kicked out of the house’ by the younger model.

Much of the time, experienced hardware professionals may actually be able to repair or salvage your old equipment. Instead of buying new equipment, you can save money and the environment by repairing, reusing, and recycling your hardware. There are several online vendors that will pay top dollar for your used cisco, dell, apple, HP, or any brand name computer hardware. This creates an ‘eco-system’ for computer hardware that benefits the planet instead of harming it.

Some of these vendors provide repair and recycling services to resell the refurbished computer equipment at a lower price. In turn, businesses and consumers can then purchase a refurbished cisco or refurbished juniper router, dell server or mac powerbook at a discounted price. The key to this cycle is no new equipment needs to be manufactured, and in turn create additional waste.

Many citizens, cities, consumers and corporations still do not know how to properly dispose of computer equipment, even though it has become so commonplace. It is integral that this ‘know-how’ become common knowledge.
